Phytosterols (plant sterols) occur naturally in plant materials such as nuts, grains, seeds, , but they are absorbed by the gut at much lower levels than cholesterol.
Phytosterols can now be found in “special” margarines, spreads and yoghurts etc.
Consuming phytosterols in sufficient quantities has the potential to:
• Reduce total cholesterol
• Reduce LDL cholesterol
Without affecting HDL cholesterol or triglycerides Phytosterols appear to act by decreasing the absorption of cholesterol in the intestine.
A daily intake of 2g of phytosterols has been shown to lower/reduce blood cholesterol which is a risk factor in the development of coronary heart disease.
